How our precision metrics are measured

Manual Precision

±4 mm Surface Deviation

Precision measurements were established through multiple controlled grading tests conducted using the IRONWORTH Precision Ground Finishing System. For manual precision testing, finished surfaces were independently measured at a series of predetermined points across the graded area, using the completed surface as the reference rather than an artificial level datum. The measured elevations were compiled and compared against the mean finished-surface profile to determine the variation and standard deviation across the tested area. Repeated tests were conducted across different passes and surface conditions to establish a representative result rather than relying on a single best-case measurement.

The resulting ±4 mm Surface Deviation represents the measured extreme deviation observed within the tested surfaces relative to their established finished-surface reference.

Guided Precision

±1.5 mm Grade Accuracy

For guided precision testing, the same principle was applied using a defined laser target/design grade as the reference. Elevations were recorded at multiple predetermined locations throughout each finished test area and compared directly with the laser-controlled target elevation. The results from repeated tests were then statistically analysed to determine the mean error and standard deviation of the measurements relative to the target grade.

The resulting ±1.5 mm Grade Accuracy represents the measured deviation from the design grade across the tested surfaces under the specified test conditions.

These figures are intended to provide a transparent, repeatable basis for comparing manual and guided grading performance, rather than suggesting that every point on every surface will achieve the stated tolerance under all operating conditions.
